Internationally, United States Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden, the orchestrator of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. Operation Neptune Spear was the name of the mission ordered by President Obama. After the body was identified, Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Nationally, the movement “Occupy Wall Street” was a protest of corporate greed and widespread economic inequality experienced by the citizens of New York, as well as the country as a whole. Those protesting came from a wide variety of backgrounds, further demonstrating how far the consequences of greed can branch in the world. The physical protest was broken up in November of 2011 by NYPD, but the movement became known as simply “Occupy” in order to encompass the widespread economic inequality.
Locally, a new grocery store, ShopRite of Somerville, was under construction and set to open as early as November 2011. The town of Somerville has been out of an in-town grocery store since the closure of Pathmark in 2007. The development of this new grocery store, as well as plans for a new shopping center right nearby, was seen as evidence of the evolution of Downtown Somerville into something bigger and better than it was before.
