Internationally, there was an attempted assassination on Malala Yousafzai. Malala was fighting for women’s rights to education in Afghanistan. She, and two school friends, were wounded from the attempted assasination on their way home from school. Despite this terrifying event in her life, Malala continued to fight the battle she believed in and has rallied for education rights since.
Nationally, President Obama was reelected for a second term, beating his opponent Republican Mitt Romney. This was a particularly impressive feat considering he was elected into a global recession and has managed to continue to have the popular vote, despite a decline in overall popularity. During this term, Obama legalized same-sex marriage, attempted fix gun laws, and created many other policies that have affected our society.
Locally, Hurricane Sandy came through New Jersey and left devastating damage. Notably, Hurricane Sandy caused the largest power outage in American history, leaving 2.7 million houses and businesses without power in New Jersey alone. There were relief efforts on both the state and federal level to help save people and figure out the next steps to recovery.
My family and I took a trip to Massachusetts during Hurricane Sandy once school was officially closed for my older brother. This allowed us to miss the brunt of the storm, which definitely worked because I don’t remember anything about it at all.
