Contemporary History

Internationally, a German airplane assisted by co-pilot Andreas Lubitz crashed in the French Alps; it was determined that Lubitz intentionally slammed the plane into a mountain. This intentional crash resulted in the death of 150 passengers. Lubitz had been flying for the German aircraft company since 2013, having clocked 630 hours in the air, had no reason to crash the plane and no involvement with terrorist groups.

Nationally, same-sex marriage was approved for all states nationwide. It was a 5-4 ruling in the Supreme Court, 46 years after the riot at New York Stonewall. This legalization meant that same-sex couples could enjoy the same legal rights as heterosexual marriages and will be recognized on official documents.

Locally, the town of Somerville had to crack down on absentee landlords due to the discovery of a deceased individual in a neglected apartment. This was brought to the attention of the mayor because individuals staying at a rooming house complained of a foul smell from a studio apartment; this smell ended up being one of the tenants decomposing. Negligent landlords were under fire, not only for the decomposing tenant but also for repeatedly failing building inspections and not resolving a 5 year issue of bed bugs.
