Contemporary History

Internationally, there was a mass shooting in the mosque and Islamic center of Christchurch, New Zealand. There were 51 fatalities and 49 injuries. After this horrific event, the prime minister Jacinda Ardern announced a nationwide ban on military-style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles.

Nationally, the US Women’s soccer team won the Fifa Women’s World Cup. This win was their second consecutive, fourth overall, championship win. It was a 2-0 win against the Netherlands, with team Captain Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle scoring the two goals.

Locally, authorities arrested 19 people on alleged charges of using social media chatting apps to lure children into sexual activities. This was a bust, so the children they thought they were talking to were actually police officers posing as children. The 19 men were arrested and reprimanded in Somerset County Jail.
